Computing child support in Texas
The Texas Family Code has definitive guidelines that Texas county courts use to compute child support when the paying parent—also known as the obligor—has monthly net resources at or less than $7,500. In such cases, the court presumptively applies the following schedule:
| No. of children involved | Obligor's net resources |
|
1 2 3 4 5 6 or more |
20% 25% 30% 35% 40% Not less than 40% |
These are the general Texas child support guidelines, which a judge may adjust based on certain circumstances. However, the court cannot order the obligor to pay more support money than what is referred to as "the presumptive amount," which is determined by calculating the greater of either method:
- Multiplying the percentages shown in this chart by $7,500
- Multiplying by an amount equal to 100% of the proven needs of the child
To estimate your child support liability more precisely, including health insurance support, you can use the Texas Child Support Calculator.
